Algoma Steel reached a supply agreement with South Korean conglomerate Hanwha to provide steel for land vehicles, contingent on Hanwha securing Canada's contract for up to 12 Royal Canadian Navy submarines. The deal was announced June 1 as part of Hanwha's bid strategy.

The arrangement demonstrates how Canadian suppliers can secure positions in major defence procurements by partnering with foreign prime contractors. If Hanwha wins the submarine contract, Algoma's Sault Ste. Marie operations would supply high-grade steel for associated land-based military vehicles and support equipment.

For Algoma's 2,700 workers, the deal represents potential stable demand in the defence sector, which offers premium pricing compared to commodity steel markets. The steelmaker has been repositioning toward higher-value products since emerging from creditor protection.

Defence industry observers note this coupling of steel supply to prime contractor success creates supply chain interdependencies that could influence federal procurement decisions.

Watch whether other Canadian manufacturers pursue similar contingent arrangements with submarine bidders.
